Pugad: Filipino word for Nest

The initial idea of the Pugad house is derived from the concept of a bird hide, in which people can stay and observe the outdoors with a veil that hides them from their view. In more ways than one, its form is reminiscent of a nest, where there is a common centralized point where activity is secure from outside forces. It is where like-minded people who cherish the feeling of the outdoors would want to thrive. The dwelling focuses on being a sanctuary for Filipino wildlife photographers and nature-goers who seek to have a bird hide inspired-home to live in the common ground between man and nature.

Pugad focuses on one primary activity: bird watching. This main activity is what drives the concept of the entire dwelling, allowing unique shapes to be ergonomically designed to contort to bird watching. Most prominently are the bays with separated fins in the first floor, for photographers and bird watchers to stalk and wait for birds to appear in front of their view. Its second floor has a garden, meant to be a lure or an invitation for birds with its flowering plants, contrasting to the first floor’s concept of looking out for birds.
