Karimlan

Filipino for darkness. A moon festival.

Karimlan Fair 2019 is Philippine Science High School Main Campus's annual school fair for the Academic year 2018-2019. For that year, my batch (2021) was in charge of the preparations of the three day school fair. I was a part of the Karimlan Promotions Committee as a regular member. I learned a bunch of stuff while working with my committee, and I was able to improve myself in digital art.

As a Promotions committee member, I took on two highly crucial roles: the main photographer and one of the main artists. As a photographer, I was in charge of the Profile Picture photoshoot and three day coverage. As an artist, I'm in charge of making specific pubmats and shirt designs.

Sadsad Dance Event Pubmat

Sadsad is a dance event during Karimlan 2019. The background artwork was inspired by TWICE member Jeongyeon dancing in her 2018 SBS Gayo Daejun Outfit.

A scrapped work for the same dance event, this background art features BLACKPINK member Lalisa Manoban dancing in her Swalla performance outfit. Initially, there was supposed to be a follow-up pubmat for the dance event, but the idea was soon abandoned in favor for having a single pubmat for every event.

Pagpili ng Kubol Pubmat

This background artwork was made for an event where classes get to pick out their fair booths. This artwork features a woman holding out a glowing card, mirroring students selecting a fair booth.

Events Brochure

The brochure is an essential piece of Karimlan merch, and it serves as the schedule and map of every student who walks in the gates of Pisay. Having multiple events and a large map leaned into the problem of having to compress as much information as possible into a tiny piece of paper. The most challenging aspect with it was the design of the map with labels of important spots around Pisay. Compressing all the icons into a small two-page map was difficult, but I was able to do it in time before mass printing.

Fair Shirt Mocks

As I was a member of a small team, only comprising of 7 members, I had to step up to do other tasks. I made mocks of each fair shirt that the Fair Committee will sell pre-fair. I actually made some designs for the regular Fair Shirts, but they were unfortunately not chosen. Two of my designs were able to make it through, the Haliya and Aswang designs. They were sold as a special edition shirts during the three days of Karimlan.

Early Shirt Concepts

Bakunawa is a Filipino mythical creature. It is believed to be a gigantic dragon from the seas that devours the moons. It is known to look like a giant sea serpent with a mouth big enough to eat the moon.

Although this design wasn't chosen for a shirt, the design of the Bakunawa was used in multiple promotional materials such as online pubmats and Powerpoint slides.

Haliya is an entity known as the goddess of the Moon and the main rival of Bakunawa. There are eight moons around Haliya, mirroring the eight moons in Philippine mythology. This Haliya has wings shaped like a crescent moon, emphasizing her as a moon goddess. This design was revised to be more minimal to reduce printing cost.

The term "Aswang" can be thought of as an aggregate term for multiple Filipino supernatural creatures. This interpretation takes on a closer approach to a Tik-Tik and a Manananggal. The Aswang is a huge bat-like creature at night, actively hunting pregnant women. It uses its long proboscis to kill a pregnant woman's unborn child.

The Minokawa is a dragon-like bird said to be capable of swallowing the sun, and its feathers are like that of sharp swords. The Tikbalang is a tall, bony humanoid creature with the head and hooves of a horse and disproportionately long limbs.

Tarot Card Concept

Tarot Cards were an idea that was brought up during the early conceptualization phase of Karimlan 2019. Fellow member Manuel Macaraig initially conceptualized the idea of the tarot cards; he also made a couple of designs as well! They weren't used in any of the promotional materials of the Fair. The design for the cards was instead made to be a part of the regular shirt line, but these designs weren't chosen to be a part of the final lineup.
